CPI Adds New MasterFormat Specifications to Library

February 15, 2008

MasterFormat™ 2004 Edition, a publication of the Construction Specifications Institute (CSI), is the most widely used standard for most commercial and institutional building projects in the United States and Canada. CSI is a national association dedicated to creating standards and formats to improve construction documents and project delivery. The organization is unique in the industry in that its members are a cross section of specifiers, architects, engineers, contractors and building materials suppliers.

MasterFormat is a list of standardized numbers and titles for organizing construction bidding and contract requirements, specifications, drawing notes, cost data, and building operations by work results. MasterFormat's Division 27 specifically addresses communications construction, providing specifications and instructions for areas such as data, voice, audio, video, cabling, enclosures, grounding and bonding. It is under this division that CPI products fall.

CPI is continually updating our MasterFormat documents. Currently we have products listed in the following sections:

  • Section 27 05 28: Pathways for Communications Systems
  • Section 27 11 16: Communications Cabinets, Racks, Frames and Enclosures
  • Section 27 11 23: Cable Management and Ladder Rack

These documents are in Microsoft® Word format so that you can easily pull the information you need for your own. Word format allows customers to easily cut and paste documents together to form complete specifications that list multiple products. Each Section has three parts: general requirements, product specifications, and installation requirements. CPI specifications are organized into separate files by product to help the customer find the product or products that they wish to specify quickly. However, MasterFormat organizes products by Sections which group similar product classes. For example, Section 27 11 16 covers Communications Cabinets, Racks, Frames and Enclosures and may list multiple products. A complete specification may have multiple listings under Sections 2 and 3, for example section 2 may include: 2.1 Racks (Universal Rack), 2.2 Server Cabinets (F-Series TeraFrame™ Cabinet), and 2.3 Network Cabinets (N-Series TeraFrame™ Network Cabinet).
