June 2007 - Monitor and Automate Access to Cabinets with CPI's New Electronic Locking System

WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif., June 2007—Chatsworth Products, Inc. (CPI), a leading manufacturer that sets the benchmark by providing superior structural support to organize, store and secure IT infrastructure equipment offers the Electronic Locking System to automate access control and monitoring for CPI Cabinets in the data center.

The Electronic Locking System for CPI Cabinets is an IP addressable locking solution that increases security by providing automated access control and monitoring for cabinets in the data center. Managed with software through an Ethernet connection, the Electronic Locking System eliminates physical keys by assigning each user, group or guest access codes or proximity cards to open specific cabinets, while maintaining a detailed data log of access attempts, configuration changes and modifications to cabinet handle status. Since access rights are assigned with software, administrators can quickly update system configurations and user privileges as desired.

ustomized to meet individual site requirements and customer needs, CPI's Electronic Locking System combines five modular components, including the Communications Module, Electronic Lock Upgrade Kit, Electronic Lock Control Module, Keypad Module and Proximity Card Reader Module. The Communications Module provides a single IP addressable network connection and is used to setup and configure the Electronic Locking System. Each Communications Module can support any combination of up to 64 Electronic Lock Control, Keypad and Proximity Card Reader Modules to control access to 256 cabinets (512 handles) and generates alarm outputs for unauthorized entries. Additional Communication Modules can be added as the network grows and more access is required.

The mechanical lock on the cabinet's swing handle is replaced with the Electronic Lock Upgrade Kit, an electronic solenoid/latch that releases the door's spring-loaded swing handle when the correct access code is entered on a networked computer, Keypad Module or Proximity Card Reader Module. Connect up to eight Electronic Lock Upgrade Kits to the Communications Module using the Electronic Lock Control Module which activates the solenoids that open the cabinet handles. Each handle can have up to five access codes and can be assigned to 24 user groups. The Electronic Lock Control Module also reports the opened or closed status of the handle.

User access codes are entered through a Keypad Module located on or near the cabinet to open any of the cabinet handles on the attached Electronic Lock Control Modules, or use the Proximity Card Reader Module and issue proximity cards to each user or guest as keys. The proximity cards can be programmed with a specific handle access code or with up to 24 user group codes to open multiple cabinets. Proximity cards can also be programmed to open handles a specific number of times, expire after a certain number of uses or on a particular date.
