Desktops on the Chopping Block: Hewlett-Packard Announces Major Changes to Business Model

HP-Logo.gifLate last week, Hewlett-Packard (HP), one of the world's largest information technology companies, shook up the industry by announcing plans to evaluate "strategic alternatives" to its overall business model - most notably, its Personal Systems Group (PSG), and with it, the possible jettisoning of a major component of the company, the personal computer (PC) business (not to mention a number of PC off-shoots including its latest forays into the touchscreen tablet and mobile software industries).

So why walk away from a segment of business that produced approximately $41 billion revenue in 2010? According to Leo Apotheker, HP President and CEO, the move represents more than just restructuring financial focus to increase value, it's about the future.

"In March [2011] we outlined a strategy for HP, built on cloud, solutions and software to address the changing requirements of our customers." Which customers exactly? "Enterprise, small and midsize business and the public sector."

Yet this emphasis on enterprise is nothing new for HP - already one of the world's largest providers of servers, switches and other high-volume data storage solutions. Much like Dell, who has also made recent commitments to more IT-focused business goals, HP's move is less about navigating uncharted waters than it is about priority.
