2020 is poised to be an exciting year for Information and Communications Technology (ICT) infrastructure professionals. In the data center, facilities engineers will need to manage higher rack power densities while tracking and monitoring equipment across an increasingly diverse hybrid network. On premise, administrators will need to upgrade networks to support faster Wi-Fi 6 and 5G access speeds, including upgrades to Power over Ethernet (PoE) to support higher power demands from equipment. And in manufacturing, industrial and commercial sites, systems integrators will need to add more sensors to continue monitoring for automation.
That means extending the network and placing new network connections in unfamiliar environments, while the corresponding increase in time-sensitive upstream data will mean placing some compute and storage back on the premise and closer to workloads to supplement existing data centers.
Finally, PoE and digital power for building lighting, automation and appliances are just starting to gain traction. These could revolutionize commercial building power distribution systems and bring new requirements for low voltage contractors.
